MODEX 2018: Pyramid’s Automated Sortation, Order Finishing Systems Demo Combines Multiple Fulfillment Technologies

Directed by Pyramid’s software and controls, an order fulfillment demo system in MODEX Booth B3763 showcases synchronized operation of automated sortation, document insertion and print-and-apply labeling.

Pyramid, a Matthews Automation Solutions’ brand, will be highlighting its automated sortation and order finishing solutions in Booth B3763 at MODEX in a live demonstration of an order fulfillment line. The MHI-sponsored show will take place in Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center, April 9–12, 2018.

The entire automated fulfillment system demo—from order picking to manifesting—is controlled and directed by Pyramid’s Director Warehouse Execution and Warehouse Control software (WES/WCS) and control solutions. Both individual products and packed shipping cartons will be routed through the system, which integrates synchronized sortation, document insertion and print-and-apply labeling.

In addition to balancing carton flow and labeling, Pyramid Director WES also determines and directs routing of items via an integrated modular plastic belt transfer and diverter station. At that point in the demo, the transfer unit either diverts an item directly into a shipping carton or into a tote for further processing at an adjacent, dual-sided put wall—where it awaits additional items to complete the order. Outfitted with light-directed picking modules on both the sortation and pack out sides, order cartons completed at the put wall are then inducted back into the system for automatic document insertion and print-and-apply labeling. The demo also includes the new Matthews Autonomous Mobile Robots transporting totes from the pick area to the sortation area.

“For a long time the e-commerce revolution put the focus on getting orders out the door to meet highly competitive delivery times. Now there’s a growing emphasis on how the order goes out the door,” says Mukesh Ram, founder of Pyramid, explaining the concept behind the demo.

“Whether a facility needs to meet certain labeling compliance standards or wants to provide an enhanced customer experience,” Ram continues, “distributors now recognize that streamlining their packaging process with flexible automated solutions—such as light-directed put walls, autonomous mobile robots, and order finishing systems—must become a key part of their process in order to achieve the highest levels of efficiency in order to compete with other direct-to-consumer operations.”

Pyramid’s WES/WCS software and control solutions are ideal for the automation synchronization needs of today’s omni-channel and e-commerce fulfillment centers. Pyramid Director WES seamlessly manages automated processes to generate optimized order fulfillment by synergizing complex, previously disparate automation technologies (such as print-and-apply labeling, auto-bagging/boxing, automatic document insertion, exception management, scan verification and check weighing) end-to-end. It also provides managers with visually accessible dashboards that convey business intelligence metrics.
